Turtle Season: Conservation and Connection at Del Mar Los Cabos

Written by Del Mar Los Cabos | December 23, 2024

The turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez are more than a stunning backdrop—they’re a sanctuary for one of nature’s most awe-inspiring events: turtle season. Each year, these magnificent sea turtles return to our shores to nest, continuing a timeless cycle that’s both magical and deeply meaningful.

At Del Mar Los Cabos, we celebrate this natural phenomenon as more than just a spectacle; it’s a call to action. With miles of protected beachfront, we proudly embrace our role as stewards of this land, balancing luxury living with a profound respect for the environment. Our community actively contributes to preserving these incredible creatures through dedicated programs, expert-led conservation efforts, and opportunities for hands-on involvement.

The Wonder of Turtle Season

From July to December, the beaches of Los Cabos transform as sea turtles migrate to nest. Females carefully lay and bury 60 to 100 eggs in the sand, ensuring the next generation of hatchlings can continue their journey. About 45 to 60 days later, the eggs hatch, and the tiny turtles make their courageous trek to the sea, where their adventure truly begins.

Five of the world’s seven sea turtle species call the beaches of Los Cabos home during this time:

  • Olive Ridley: Known for their synchronized nesting, they’re the most abundant in the region.
  • Leatherback: The giants of the turtle world, reaching up to 1,000 pounds.
  • Hawksbill: Easily recognized by their ornate shells and sharp, hawk-like beaks.
  • Green Sea Turtle: Iconic and herbivorous, with a diet that gives them their greenish hue.
  • Loggerhead: Known for their strong swimming skills and reddish-brown shells.

This annual migration is more than just a natural wonder—it’s a vital part of the ecosystem, supporting coral reefs, seagrass beds, and other marine life that thrive in Los Cabos’ waters.

Del Mar Los Cabos: A Commitment to Conservation

Preserving the natural beauty of Los Cabos is woven into the very fabric of Del Mar Los Cabos. Our dedication to environmental stewardship takes center stage during turtle season, supported by a dedicated on-site turtle expert and specialized conservation programs.

Here’s how we protect our beaches and the turtles that rely on them:

  • Daily Beach Patrols: Monitoring for new nests and ensuring the safety of nesting turtles.
  • Nest Marking and Protection: Safeguarding eggs from predators and human interference.
  • Nest Relocation: Carefully moving vulnerable nests to safer areas for optimal survival.

Through these initiatives, we create an environment where turtles—and our community—can thrive.

A Unique Opportunity for Residents and Guests

Turtle season is not just about conservation—it’s about connection. Del Mar Los Cabos invites residents and guests to participate in this incredible effort through guided hatchling releases and educational programs.

Imagine watching tiny turtles take their first steps toward the ocean, knowing you’re playing a part in their survival. It’s an experience that leaves a lasting impression, creating memories as meaningful as they are magical.

To ensure the safety of these magnificent creatures, we encourage everyone to follow these simple guidelines:

  • Respect marked nesting areas and keep a safe distance.
  • Dim outdoor lighting at night to avoid disorienting turtles.
  • Observe quietly to minimize stress on nesting turtles.
  • Reduce noise levels, especially after dark.
  • Dispose of waste responsibly to keep beaches clean and safe.

Together, we can ensure these timeless rituals continue for generations to come.
